Only Princesses Wear Crowns

Terribly sorry.... I've been EXTREMELY swamped at work and all the spare time goes to my princesses.

Speaking of princesses here's a great story for the blog. Last weekend, I told the twins to get ready for a girls trip to Borders book store. Now when 4-year old girls get ready, they get READY. They were already dressed for the day, so I told them to go upstairs and get their shoes on. After waiting quite a while, they came downstairs and all I could do was stare at them and admire their sense of fashion.

One twin (Sydney) had on Ballet Tu Tu (and mermaid panties) and the shiny top from her Jasmine costume from Halloween. To complete her ensemble, she proudly wore her pink boots which were on the wrong feet.

The other twin (Taylor) had a sleeveless dress obtained from the back of the closet in the "last year's spring clothes that don't fit section" and sandals.

I tried to explain to both of them that it's 32-degrees and a Ballet Tu Tu and last year's sandals are not really warm enough to wear outside. Now I would like to think I have control in my home. I do not need Super Nanny and my children listen most of the time. Well, I do not have control in my home. But I do have the gift of compromise.

After a very long debate, we all met in the middle. Walking out of the house, Sydney did wear the Ballet Tu Tu but at least I got her to wear a pair of tights underneath and black shoes (still on the wrong feet). How did I get "my way" you ask? I achieved victory by letting her wear her princess crown - she never takes it off, not even at bedtime.

The other twin, Taylor did wear last year’s sandals, but I did persuade her to wear socks with them. Now I put my foot down with the dress. She wore a turtleneck on underneath and a green boa.

I know, I know…. They looked like those kids you see out in public, and you say to yourself “I will never let my kids dress like that.” So we get to the bookstore to choose a book and indulge in a white chocolate mocha (for myself). The girls are sitting in random chairs in the children's section and this little boy walks slowly back and forth looking at Sydney. Back and forth. Back and forth. Then he walks over and grabs her shoulders and kisses her on the cheek. Sydney has this look of horror and asks to leave immediately while the father of the little boy apologizes profusely.

Now I am going to misspell some words here so you get the total effect. I buy the girls their books and we get in the car. Sydney quietly gets into her car seat and hands me her princess crown. She said “Mommy, I don’t want to warrr my cown any more and I don't want to be a pwincess eifer. Pwincesses arah only subbosed to be kissed by pwinces and he’s NOT a pwince. I just hafta going to marry you and daddy.”

I looked at her and listened earnestly. This little 4-year old that never takes her princess crown off, not even at bedtime has just turned in her crown. I just said, “Honey I understand. It’s okay, and yes I will be more than happy to marry you.” I dug a ringpop out of my purse and put it on her tiny finger. She licked it happily all the way home and we lived happiwy eveah afterrr.

The innocence of a 4-year old is the sweetest thing of all.

First of all, it's good to have you back bloggin'.

Secondly, I hope this young lad's father wasn't too hard on him lest he grow up to write a novel with a title such as "Stolen Kiss: Birth of a Wallflower."

Gina, I hope you do have girls. I can totally see that in the Gina/Thom Future!

Jas, we are lucky aren't we?

Queen, don't ever take your crown off!!!

Not... The poor boy's father was mortified. It was hysterical. He just kept apologizing. Poor guy (wonder if the boy takes after dad?)

thank you for your charming comment on mine I'm sure (you can talk lady!).

You see, that's how little boys begin to destroy little girl's princess dreams - it's a good job you grow up quicker than we do..
